University Press

Now, South Carolina University Press has a LOT of historical cookbooks. I decided I’d check out the house presses of the Big 10 Universities, and see what I could find. Search by subject and if you can’t find cookbook, search for food studies.

University of Illinois – At least 3 books I’d consider buying.

Indiana University – lots of drinking guides

Iowa University – Not much of interest to me

Michigan State University – 5 Civil war food books

Michigan University – 3 food studies books

University of Minnesota – 5 cookbooks. (if you click on them, more cookbooks are linked on the find similar section)

Ohio State University – zip.

Pennsylvania State University – Some of those look interesting

Purdue University – they really put the science in food science with page turners like “Principles of aseptic processing and packaging”

University of Wisconsin – zip.

Buying facsimilies

There are a number of sellers who deal in forgotten or historical books. You don’t really want to buy from them if you want originals, but if you want to review a historical work, you can look over a copy. Not authentic, but much more affordable.

For cookbooks, 2 good sources of facsimiles (assuming you don’t want online books) are applewood books and forgotten books.
